Duck hunting in Southern Michigan 10/16/00

Duck hunting in Southern Michigan - By Mike Boyd of Coldwater Charters

Three words Hot and Cold. Duck hunting so far has been a little disappointing. But If you look back to the past years you'll see that it's normal for Oct. With only a smattering of flight ducks and mostly locals, they get wise real quick. They find the local refuges to get away from the hunting pressure. If you take one day off from hunting you'll see we have good numbers of ducks they just head out at daybreak to places that are now safe. The key is to leave certain places go and don't hunt them until they load up with secure feeling ducks. This is what separates they men from the boys. I know this because I've done both and a quality hunt is a lot better then a few O.K. hunts. One of the problems with this though is you may not have sole permission on a given property. Well you can try talking to the other parties but this does not always work either. What I would recommend is to scout on some of these days. You'll be amazed at what you'll see and hopeful what you gain from doing this. You may find new hunting spots or better yet what fields there feeding in. When the ducks are using a particular field you can have the best hunts of the year. Most likely it is ducks from several potholes, rivers and lakes. So you'll see lots of ducks that want to be where your at, the ultimate Duck hunt. The way I set up for field ducks is about the same for Geese. One thing is most people don't have a big number of duck decoys for the field. No problem just use your goose decoys and put out a few water duck decoys wedged in the dirt or corn stubble. Always keep the goose decoys separate from the ducks. It's best to be in the area you seen the ducks working in the field but you can't, set up with the decoys 40 yards upwind and then set in the fence row as long as it does not have real high trees. I always look for open spots in the fence row. If you do set up in the center and layout in the field, just cover up a little and be still and always be down wind from your decoys. Ducks tend to start in Low and then climb up as they approach close to the decoys. Keep a few duck decoys close enough though so your calling looks and sounds real. Good luck and remember the best is yet to come.
