Fly fishing the AuSable river in Michigan is a
religious experience. In fact many people call the flys only, catch and release
only, section of the river on the main branch "The Holy Waters".
It was this stretch of water that inspired
several men from Michigan who fished it to start the Trout
Unlimited organization.
The fish in the Holy Waters section of the
river are plentiful and you will experience many risers on any given night. However,
these fish have seen it all and will be very selective on the flys that they will take.
The south branch of the AuSable is also not to
be missed. This branch starts near Roscommon where many canoe liveries can be found.
This stretch of river is very wild and much of it is on public land. The
Mason track surrounds much of the river here providing lots of access points. This
stretch of the river also has no kill regulations (check Michigan fishing guide for
information). Be sure to visit the Durant castle and fisherman's chapel.
If you are going the the AuSable check out Gates AuSable Lodge. Rusty Gates
provides good lodging and good food in his lodge right on the main branch Holy Waters
section. There is also a fly and tackle shop on the premises. I have stayed
there myself and can attest to the hospitality and good advice they will provide.
When in the town of Grayling check out The Fly Factory
for more good fishing information and tackle.

information on the AuSable.
