The Rogue near Friske DriveWhen fishing the
Rogue River near Grand Rapids, it is easy to imagine that you are hundreds of miles into
the northern woods of Michigan. However the truth is you are close to one of the
largest cities in the state.
Although the river is heavily fished, the
stocking done by
the state keeps it a viable fishery. Special quality fishing regulations are in
effect from the Cedar Creek area down to the Summit Avenue. The restrictions limit
fishing to flies only with special size and creel limits.
The fishing is this section of the river can rival its up
north counter-parts. Good hatches occur throughout the summer. The hatches
include large canoe hatches, so it is wise to fish during off hours.
My favorite area to fish is the area just down-stream from
cedar creek. The mouth of the creek as it empties into the river can also hold nice
fish.
See the Great Lakes Fly
Fishing Co. for further information. Visit them before your outing.
